Remembering Mr. Victor Tedesco
Seventeen years have passed since we lost our beloved former Club President, Mr. Victor Tedesco affectionately known across the island simply as “Mr. Vic.” Yet time has done nothing to diminish the enormity of what he meant to this club and to Maltese football as a whole.
A Visionary Who Rebuilt a Club
Credited by many with reviving Maltese football in the early 1980s, Mr. Tedesco passed away at the age of 91 UEFA, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. When he took over the reins at Ħamrun Spartans in 1980, the club was struggling sitting in the relegation zone. What followed was nothing short of a transformation. Between then and the end of that first season, Hamrun lost only one point, and that was in a draw with Sliema. The Malta Independent Relegation was avoided, and the revival had begun.
The Golden Era of the 1980s
The 1982/83 season marked a defining moment in the club’s history. On the club’s 75th anniversary, the Spartans won the title after an absence of 36 years and that was just the beginning of an era under the guidance of President Victor Tedesco. The Malta Independent
Central to that golden era was Mr. Tedesco’s bold and pioneering decision to bring in foreign players a move that changed the face of Maltese football entirely. Among the first arrivals were Peter Hatch and John Lineker, and enthusiasm at Ħamrun increased considerably, with sporting rivalries intensifying and attendances at the Ta’ Qali Stadium multiplying. The Malta Independent He later brought in the likes of Ivanov, Hankin, Morley, Barnes, Latchford, Rimmer, Leigh and Gallagher names that older generations of Spartans fans still speak of with great fondness.
But Mr. Tedesco’s genius was not only in recruiting foreign talent. He also lured Malta’s top footballers of the time to Ħamrun, including Ray ‘Mundu’ Vella whose signing Tedesco once described as “the icing on the cake” alongside Ray and George Xuereb, Edwin Farrugia from Floriana, Charles Zammit from Gzira, and Carlo Seychell from Valletta. The results spoke for themselves: four Maltese league titles and six Maltese Cups UEFA during his presidency, along with every other major domestic honour Maltese football had to offer. In his own words, reflecting on his method: “I used to work hand in hand with Lolly Aquilina, who was one of our best ever coaches. I am proud to say that on most occasions, I was able to pinpoint our adversaries’ defects and make the most of them to win matches.”
Making History in Europe
Under Mr. Tedesco, Ħamrun Spartans became a name known beyond Malta’s shores. The club competed regularly in European football, facing teams such as Dundee United, Everton, Reggina, Rapid Vienna, Dinamo Moscow, and Real Valladolid. The Malta Independent But perhaps the most historic moment came in 1984/85, when the Spartans became the first Maltese side to eliminate a foreign team from a UEFA competition, defeating Irish club Ballymena United on a 3-1 aggregate in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Mr. Tedesco recalled: “When we played at Ta’ Qali following the 0-1 win away to Ballymena, the stadium was packed to capacity. I had never seen such a crowd at our national stadium.”
A Stadium That Carries His Name
Beyond trophies and titles, Mr. Tedesco gave our club something that will stand long after any trophy cabinet — a home. The idea for a dedicated Ħamrun Spartans ground came to him around 1984, and after over a decade of negotiations and construction, the Victor Tedesco Stadium in the Mile End area was officially inaugurated in 1996. In his words: “It was another of my dreams that came true.” It remains a monument to his memory and always will. The Malta Independent
A Void That Cannot Be Filled
Mr. Tedesco was also a member of the council and executive board of the Malta Football Association for a number of years UEFA, always committed to the growth and integrity of the game he loved. He was a man who gave not just of his time and talent, but of his own resources on one occasion personally settling outstanding player debts running into tens of thousands of liri to keep the club alive.
The generations that came before us and those of today remain deeply grateful for everything Mr. Tedesco gave to Ħamrun Spartans and to the Ħamrun community. No matter how much time passes, Mr. Vic will always have a place in our hearts.
Rest in peace, President.
