Relentless Spartans Hit Birkirkara for Six
Ħamrun Spartans 6-1 Birkirkara
Ħamrun Spartans closed out the year with a powerful statement, crushing Birkirkara 6-1 in a dominant display at the National Stadium.
It was a timely response from the Malta champions following a challenging week, bouncing back from back-to-back defeats against Marsaxlokk and Shamrock Rovers. The win closes the gap on Floriana to just four points ahead of their top-of-the-table clash on January 6.
Despite heavy rainfall and a battered pitch, the Spartans were clinical and composed, showing their trademark attacking flair.
First-Half: Control with a Twist
After relentless pressure, Ħamrun finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute when Mouad El Fanis smashed home a precise volley following a superb cross from Raphael Compri.
But just before half-time, Stephane Makoma stunned the Spartans with an equaliser from a set-piece to make it 1-1 at the break – a rare reward for Birkirkara’s brief period of resistance.
Second-Half Onslaught
The restart saw Ħamrun raise the tempo significantly:
-
Matias Garcia fired home just five minutes into the second half to regain the lead.
-
Saliou Thioune made it 3-1 on the hour with a powerful header.
-
Garcia grabbed his second of the night with a deflected strike on 71 minutes.
-
Joseph Mbong quickly added a fifth following a defensive error.
-
And in the 90th minute, N’Dri Koffi rounded off the rout with a strong finish into the top corner.
Every department delivered: Compri dominated the flank, Garcia orchestrated the midfield, and the forward line was ruthless in front of goal. Keeper Henry Bonello remained solid when called upon.
What’s Next
Ħamrun now shift their focus to the highly anticipated encounter with Floriana – a fixture that could shape the destiny of the Opening Round title race.
The performance was not just a show of force – it was a reminder:
Ħamrun Spartans are far from done.
