Spartans Dominate to Earn Victory
The Spartan fans and players had something to celebrate at the end of the match as this season is unexpectedly turning out to be one full of turmoil for our beloved team. Nevertheless, an early goal paved the way to a comfortable 3-0 victory giving us the fifth win out of ten matches.
Hamrun started immediately on the attack and showed their intentions early on. This resulted in Santa Lucia conceding quickly as the Spartans took less than 3 minutes to forge ahead through Gojkovic following a corner. Our boys in red and black continued to pile pressure on the opponents and managed to double the lead on the 27th minute when beautiful play by Mbong resulted in an inch perfect pass to Gambin who reciprocated with an inch perfect diagonal shot that beat the Santa Lucia goalkeeper ending in the lower corner of the net. The game seemed to be heading to an easy conclusion considering the Spartan domination on show. Nevertheless, in the second half we saw what has become habitual this season, where our opponents start to dominate play and put increased pressure on our rearguard. This was a stark contrast to what was observed in the first half. Despite the continuous pressure, the Hamrun readguard held steady with K.Micallef, who took Dielna’s position in the second half, and Gojkovic communicated well to hold our opponents at bay. The only negative note is that Gojkovic’s brilliant match was marred with a caution which means he will have to sit out the game against Sliema Wanderers. Midway through the second half, Hamrun scored a third when a quick counter attack ended with a clear foul inside the penalty area by a Santa Lucia defender on Lagzir, who for this game returned to the strarting line-up. Lagzir converted to make sure of the much needed three points.
